02Thermal physics
Heat is motion.
Each dot is a particle of gas in a closed box. As the temperature rises the particles move faster: their average kinetic energy grows with the absolute temperature.

- higher T → faster particles

Every law in the syllabus becomes a working lab. Change a variable, predict the result, then learn exactly how to write it for full marks.

02Thermal physics

04Electricity & magnetism
Field lines leave the north pole and enter the south pole, crowding together where the field is strongest.
05Nuclear physics
Every nucleus has the same chance of decaying each second. You cannot say which one goes next, yet half of them always go within one half-life.
06Space physics
Planets further from the Sun travel more slowly and take far longer to complete one orbit. The outer planet here needs about five inner-planet years for one orbit.
§1 The syllabus
Core and Supplement content are marked separately, so you only study what your paper needs. Each topic is a run of short labs followed by exam-style checks.
Speed–time graphs, momentum, moments, work and power.
Kinetic particle model, gas pressure, specific heat capacity.
Refraction, lenses, the electromagnetic spectrum, sound.
Circuits, Ohm’s law, the motor effect, transformers.
The nuclear atom, radioactive decay, half-life.
The Solar System, orbits, stars and the Universe.
§2 How a lab works
Every lab follows the same three steps, built around how examiners award marks: intuition first, then the exact wording that scores.
Commit to an answer before anything moves. A wrong guess is where the idea sticks.
Double the launch speed. Does the flight time halve, stay the same, or double?
Change variables, pause time, take readings. Graphs and equations update as you go.
| vₓ / m s⁻¹ | t / s |
|---|---|
| 8.0 | 1.43 |
| 12.0 | 1.43 |
| 16.0 | 1.43 |
Build a full-mark answer from mark-scheme keywords, then try past-paper questions.
“Horizontal velocity is constant; the vertical motion depends only on gravity, so the time is unchanged.”
§3 Exam technique
The first word of a question tells you how much to write. Demand rises from recalling a fact to applying physics in a new situation — and so do the marks. Choose a level to see a model answer.
§4 Daily six
Everyone gets the same six today, so you can compare scores with your class. Your answers are kept on this device until tomorrow’s set.
